About Relay For Life
Relay For Life is a community festival celebrating the power of fundraising in the fight to beat cancer. Teams fundraise for life-saving cancer research then unite at a weekend-long festival to honour everyone who has been affected by cancer.
The festival is focused around a 24-hour relay where team members take it in turns to walk around a track to show that together we will beat cancer. There will be music and activities throughout the 24 hour event and a Candle of Hope ceremony to honour every life touched by cancer. Dedicating candles to someone no longer with us, a friend or family member living with cancer, a loved one who has survived, or hope for the future - a world where all cancers are cured.
Entry is free, simply join your local Relay by starting a team, joining a team or by taking part as a survivor.
1 in 2 people born in the UK after 1960 will get cancer in their lifetime. Our research saves lives. Teams of friends and family fundraise for life-saving cancer research then unite as a community at a weekend long festival to honour everyone who has been affected by cancer and celebrate the progress made in research.
The festival is focused around a 24 hour relay where team members take it in turns to complete laps to show that together, we’ll do whatever it takes to beat cancer. Relay For Life is for everyone no matter your age or abilities. Join your fellow Relayers on the track for 1 lap or 50. Even if the track isn’t the place for you, there are many ways to join your community and celebrate your fundraising achievements over the Relay weekend.
There are Relays taking place across the UK and thousands more around the world. Collectively, we remember loved ones we’ve lost and celebrate those who have survived.
Each Relay is organised by a dedicated local volunteer committee, to deliver an incredible event of celebration and remembrance. We honour Survivors of cancer, our special guests.
Enjoy a variety of games and music from local performers. There’s something for the whole family to enjoy. Hear about Cancer Research UK’s ground-breaking science.
As darkness falls, the Relayers gather for the Candle of Hope ceremony. We light up the tracker with dedicated candles and take a moment to reflect and honour everyone affected by cancer. Finally, no Relay For Life is complete without the closing ceremony which celebrates our achievements and inspires us all to continue the fight.
Relay For life is part of an international movement, across 29 countries uniting in the worldwide fight against cancer.
The Candle of Hope ceremony is a poignant part of Relay For Life. As darkness falls, dedicated candles are lit to honour every life touched by cancer.
Everyone is invited to dedicate a candle to someone no longer with us, a friend or family member living with cancer, a loved one who has survived, or hope for the future - a world where all cancers are cured.
The Candle of Hope ceremony brings together your local community for a moment of quiet remembrance, reflection and celebration.

- Our special guests are our survivors of cancer. Each event begins with their Lap of Honour.
- Teams set up camp and take it in turns to walk around a track for the duration of the event to show the power of community spirit in the fight to beat cancer.
- The sharing of information about Cancer Research UK's ground-breaking science in cancer prevention gives us real hope for the future.
- Music, games and fundraising stalls are fun for the whole family.
- A closing ceremony celebrates our achievements and inspires us all to continue the fight.

Cancer Research UK runs Cancer Chat, our online, moderated discussion forum. This service is open 24/7 to anyone wanting to discuss any aspects on the disease. It costs around £200 to run CancerChat each day, a service that currently has around 400,000 members.

Regan's story

‘At the age of 6 I was diagnosed with a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. I only remember the positive times in hospital. I made friends with a few children, they helped me and gave me tips about eating different things like fizzy sweets when having chemo so I couldn’t taste it. Now I'm 16 years old and taking part in Relay For Life is important to me because it enables me to help other young people become aware of childhood cancers and show how cancer treatments have made significant improvements and positive outcomes.’
